Ravangla, or Rawangla or Ravongla, is a little tourist town situated at 7,000 feet in South Sikkim, about 65 km away from the state capital Gangtok. This makes the town an unusual destination for a staycation in the state. Yet, despite being far from the urban bustle, the place is connected by the state highway to major towns and strategically lies between Pelling and Gangtok. The town is an attraction for tourists because it is the starting point for a trek down Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. Enthusiasts can walk up to the Daling Gumpa, too, or the Lingdam paddy fields.

Nature lovers often prefer the resort because Ravangla is a birdwatchers’ paradise. The area is removed from the noise and pollution of the city, which is why you can freely spot a variety of species including the dark-throated thrush, laughing thrushes, blue whistling thrush, satyr tragopan, grey bushchat, blue-fronted redstart, white-browed fantail, green-backed tit, babbler, cuckoo, hill partridge and the flycatcher. Upper Ravangla sees snowfall in winter but the months of April and May is when local flora blooms in the entire area, particularly orchids and rhododendrons.

While the forests around Ravangla are a trekkers’ paradise, you could also just sit back at the resort balcony and enjoy the serene view all around. Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Pandim, Mount Sinialchu and Mount Kabru are a few of the Himalayan peaks clearly visible from the area.

A highlight of Ravangla is the Buddha Park, or the Tathagata Tsal. Constructed over nearly seven years, the park features a 130-foot Lord Buddha statue that was consecrated on March 25, 2013, by his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The statue marks the 2,550th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha. The site stands within the larger complex of the Rabong Gompa, a centuries-old monastery. The Cho Djo Lake is located within the complex and surrounded by forests, while the Ralang Monastery is close by, too.

The location is around 75 kilometres from Gangtok, 50 kilometres from Pelling and 78 kilometres from Darjeeling. For those who wish to fly in, Bagdogra International Airport is 130 kilometres away. If you choose to arrive by train, New Jalpaiguri Junction is at a distance of around 125 kilometres.
